Furniture should acknowledge the presence of the fireplace, and never bar access to it. An easy furniture arrangement is a U shape, with the fireplace at the top of the U. Though the fireplace is the focal point, you don't have to point every piece of furniture toward it. For instance, you can place wing back chairs on either side of a fireplace, facing into the room at a diagonal. Place an occasional table in between for cozy fireside reading and board games. Position a small couch and loveseat opposite each other and perpendicular to the fireplace. In a small room, place a flat screen television over the fireplace mantel.

A peek inside an interior decorating book at wall décor around fireplaces will affirm the many ways pictures or art can be displayed on a wall. But not every arrangement and wall decorating idea is pleasing to the eye. For those of us who are not designers, here are a few suggestions:

The simplest solution is a single, large framed work of art, a print, or photo. Center it slightly toward the mantel. Position equally sized framed pictures close together to form a larger shape. Hang a decorative wall mirror in a frame that complements the motif. Install decorative wall sconces on either side of the mantel to set off framed art. Line the fireplace mantel shelf with framed black and white photos of different sizes, with the unifying factor of a single color frame.

Before you bedeck your fireplace mantel, consider what you want to show off, and the impression you want to give. Since the fireplace is your focal point, what do you want visitors to see? What do you want to enjoy looking at day after day?

Your fireplace mantel should also reflect the general feel of the room. Is it:

Formal? Consider candlesticks, vases, a mantel clock, and brass wall sconces. Lived-in-casual? Use natural, eclectic elements like fresh flowers, a silk topiary, or drift wood. Incorporate glass in a less formal vein with lanterns, a clock under a glass dome, or a collection of antique bottles. Wrought iron wall sconces add a valuable grounding color for neutral palettes and highlight any wall decorating display above the mantel. Victorian? The Victorians were fond of their collections. Feel free to busy up your mantel with a doily runner, figurines, decorative plates, and perhaps a vase with peacock feathers. Minimalist? Place a single sculpture, either centered on the mantel or on a side of the mantel that faces a corner while the other is open. Cottage-by-the-beach? Arrange a collection of similar colored but varying sized shells across the mantel. Or select items you treasure, like a jar of sea glass or a cast iron anchor.

Follow the 3 plus 1 rule for easy mantel displays: Place 3 similar items close to one end, and one larger item on the other (as large as the collective 3, but no taller than the center of the picture or mirror over the mantel). Another easy arrangement is to place one item in the center of the mantel, and flank it with pairs of items on either side. One of the pairs can be similar, but not identical.

Don't feel bound by rules when arranging your fireplace mantel. Experiment with some wall decorating ideas and arrangements and layer items so they overlap. The analytical mind will prefer symmetry, and the creative eye will prefer asymmetry. Both types need some sort of balance, so play with the items until you are satisfied. If you are ever in doubt, it is better to err on the side of simplicity. Begin with an interesting mantel wall art piece, and build around it.

A fireplace is an enviable architectural detail in any home. Properly adorned with a suitable mantelpiece, wall décor, and other accouterments around it, your fireplace will become a magnificent focal point and a favorite gathering spot in your home for family and friends.

If you've been looking at buying a fire pit, then you're probably already aware that you can buy ready-made models that only require some simple assembly. But wouldn't it be nice to create your own fire pit? One that's uniquely yours? How to Get Rid of Fish Smell

The smell of fish is something that lingers in the fishing boat, in the kitchen, the pots and pans, in your car, on your hands, in your clothes and anywhere else that is touched by the fish.

It is not a pleasant smell for most people. I know there are those that say they grew up thinking that fish was supposed to smell like fish, but most find the lingering odor after the fish is long eaten to be unpleasant.

There are many home type remedies that are professed to work. Let me list some here for you to try.

1.) Wash or clean with a solution of vinegar and water.

2.) Wash or clean with a solution of bleach and water.

3.) If it is your refrigerator or freezer, empty it and turn it off. Place a container of boiling hot water with a sliced lemon in it. Leave for about an hour. Then make sure all the smelly ice is out of the freezer area and wipe down the walls and shelves with lemon water. Wipe each item thoroughly before replacing in the refrigerator or freezer.

4.) For the refrigerator or freezer, purchase vanilla-scented fridge deodorizer. It is supposed to kill the bacteria so it will put a stop to the odor for good, not just cover it up. Can be found in a good hardware store or supermarket.

5.) For a container, pots and pans or freezer, cut two potatoes and sprinkle some common table salt on it and place in the container for a couple of hours. Then wash thoroughly.

6.) Wash items with baking soda solution. 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda to 1 quart of water. Keep baking soda in the refrigerator or freezer where you normally store fish.

7.) For pots and pans try brewing some tea for 10-15 minutes. Discard and wash.

8.) For hands, etc. rubs hands with salt and then wash with a lemon scented soap or mild lemon detergent. Liberal use of nail brush at this time will also help.

9.) For clothes, give them a good soak in NappiSan or any other nappy/diaper soaker.

10.) For the fishing boat, body, clothes and children try "Simple Green". Usually can be found at your local supermarket.

11.) "Simple Green" can also be carried along on your fishing trip to clean the smell and residue of insect repellent and sunscreen from your flies or leaders.

12.) This one might take a while but is recommended as having worked. If you have had an ice chest leak in the car try covering with newspaper. This can also be used for the freezer problem. It takes a while for the newspaper to absorb the odor but it seems to do so.

13.) While cooking to reduce the fish smell in the area try heating a little bit of olive oil in a pan and adding cinnamon to it. The fish smell will give way to the sweet cinnamon smell.

14.) If you want to get rid of the fish smell before you cook it, soak the raw fish in a little bit of vinegar and a lot of water. Is should not affect the flavor in any way.

15.) For the microwave try soaking a wet dish towel with a squirt of dish detergent on it and then place it in the center of the microwave and run the microwave on high for a few minutes. The scented stem will clean it. Then let air for a few minutes.

Then there are also some commercial solutions. Here are a few you might want to try:

1.) Zielonka Smell Buster - made in Germany out of special high-grade stainless steel. The Smell Buster is supposed to neutralize odors as soon as it comes into contact with air and water, leaving it fresh and clean. Try an internet search to find it.

2.) Several companies manufacture a liquid concentrate which sells for about .00 for 1/4 to 1/2 ounce. A couple drops are put on a piece of cotton and placed in the area to absorb odors, in the cabinet or in a room.

A couple of brand names are: "Odor-Away" by Wrap-on Co., available at hardware and hospital supply stores and "Clean-Air" found at some appliance repair shops.

Hospital supply stores carry Dow Chemical Hospital Disinfectant and Deodorant Spray. Spray into cabinet and quickly shut the door.

The Beauty of Self Leveling Concrete

Self leveling concrete is an amazing product. The beauty of self leverers is that you can control the height of your floor. They can also be stained and sealed. Mapei makes a self leveling product that can level smooth as glass with almost zero shrinkage. Other companies are working on similar products.

During the past week I filmed the installation of Mapei self leveling concrete in a new restaurant. It was the only flooring solution that would work.

One of the issues was that there was little thought about the floor until late in the project. This happens a lot. Flooring should be the first consideration in every project then design and build from there, not the other way around.

All the moldings were already in and painted. Tile had been installed in the kitchen leaving a height issue where it meets the main floor. Entrance door had been installed leaving little height for flooring below the door. All the doorways had a height issue at the transition.

The self leveling concrete solved all the height issues. The self leveler was poured thin, slightly more than 1/4 inch. A guage rake is used to pull the concrete to the exact height. The guage rake has feet that can be adjusted to the exact height you need.

It's amazing to watch. The self leveling concrete is very wet and flows to an even flat surface. Then a "Smoother" is used to flatten out even more. The Smoother is a tool that has flat edge on a pole that is pulled over the surface.

The floor looked awesome when complete. It took 3 people about 90 minutes to resurface 1200 square feet. When complete you could see a perfect transition at all the doorways, entrance door could swing open freely, transition to tile in kitchen was perfect.

The next day dark brown Acetone concrete dyes were sprayed randomly on the floor. Then a diluted brown concrete acid stain was sprayed over the entire floor and left on for 1 hour. Then they rinsed the acid stain to stop the chemical reaction with the concrete and to remove any residue.

The final step in the coloring process was application of diluted brown water based concrete dyes over the entire floor. The process was a combination of spraying then evening out the dye with a thick microfiber mop.

The next day the self leveling concrete was sealed with 2 coats of a solvent based concrete sealer.

The last step which brought it all together was application of a high solids floor finish. Once the second coat was applied the floor came alive.

The final result was a highly functional, decorative, low maintenance floor. One very unique feature is the importance of wall color and lighting. The floor picked up reds from the awning outside. Copper panels reflected a copper color onto the floor. This is a feature that is not achieved from other flooring products and is critical when working with decorative concrete.

There were imperfections as with all decorative concrete floors. But generally the floor was a thing of beauty. Any imperfections would not be evident since 80% over the floor would be covered with tables and chairs.
